Part 2: Tuesday, March 31, 2026, 6 PM - 8:30 PM

Part 3: Wednesday, April 1, 2026, 6 PM - 8:30 PM

During this 3-part class, participants will learn how to use a table saw, jointer, thickness planer and mitersaw while making a laminated cutting board. Hard maple and cherry will be used for the laminations. Limited use of a router will also be involved.

Get to know and understand turning safety, the lathe and its attachments, tuning tools, wood grain orientation and its significance. The basics of tool sharpening will be covered as you get the feel of the tools and make beads/coves and chips. This is a fun class to get the fundamentals of spindle work and is a required class to proceed on to Introduction to Bowl Turning.

Learn what you need to know to pop the grain on figured woods and how to select the best finish for the particular needs of your project. Get the results you want with proper surface preparation, the correct combination of finishing products, and use of the correct application techniques and tools for the job. Topics include: finishing characteristics of wood species; surface preparation and dealing with defects; coloring wood with dyes, stains and toners; selecting top coats and the characteristics of each; application tools including brushing and spray gun basics; and finishing the finish.
